The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's opening with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
