A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background assisted us verify the video.
We are analyzing images and video circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
